Pope Francis ends Dilexit Nos with a final word about the importance of mission as the visible embodiment of our response to the relationship with God. Mission cannot be accomplished apart from God's love, and a Christian can not live God's love without loving his neighbor. Pope Francis final prayer for the love of Christ to be known through the work of every Christian active in his or her own vocation, is the universal task that we are born into at our baptism. Chapter 5 Paragraphs 212-220

Each session of Dilexit Nos in a Year begins by breaking open the scriptures and topics covered in order to outline the themes of Pope Francis, and frame our conversations for the weekly discussion for the year ahead. For the next 50 weeks, we will work through four to five paragraphs reading of the text of Dilexit Nos, with opening prayer, and short reflection based upon the paragraphs covered and the prayerful discussions of the questions to ponder together as we reflect on the work of spiritual and communal formation and mission in this Jubilee Year of Hope.

A reflection on the Sacred Heart from St Bonaventure
Take thought now, redeemed one, and consider how great and worthy is he who hangs
on the cross for you. His death brings the dead to life, but at his passing heaven and
earth are plunged into mourning and hard rocks are split asunder.
It was a divine decree that permitted one of the soldiers to open his sacred side with a
lance. This was done so that the Church might be formed from the side of Christ as he
slept the sleep of death on the cross, and so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: 'They
shall look on him whom they pierced'. The blood and water which poured out at that
moment were the price of our salvation. Flowing from the secret abyss of our Lord's
heart as from a fountain, this stream gave the sacraments of the Church the power to
confer the life of grace, while for those already living in Christ it became a spring of living
water welling up to life everlasting.
Arise, then, beloved of Christ! Imitate the dove 'that nests in a hole in the cliff', keeping
watch at the entrance 'like the sparrow that finds a home'. There like the turtledove hide
your little ones, the fruit of your chaste love. Press your lips to the fountain, 'draw water
from the wells of your Saviour; for this is the spring flowing out of the middle of paradise,
dividing into four rivers', inundating devout hearts, watering the whole earth and making
it fertile.
Run with eager desire to this source of life and light, all you who are vowed to God's
service. Come, whoever you may be, and cry out to him with all the strength of your
heart. "O indescribable beauty of the most high God and purest radiance of eternal light!
Life that gives all life, light that is the source of every other light, preserving in
everlasting splendour the myriad flames that have shone before the throne of your
divinity from the dawn of time! Eternal and inaccessible fountain, clear and sweet stream
flowing from a hidden spring, unseen by mortal eye! None can fathom your depths nor
survey your boundaries, none can measure your breadth, nothing can sully your purity.
From you flows 'the river which gladdens the city of God' and makes us cry out with joy
and thanksgiving in hymns of praise to you, for we know by our own experience that
'with you is the source of life, and in your light we see light’.

Pope Francis begins the explanation of the practice of the devotion of the Sacred Heart with the call for universal understanding of the Church's concept of Reparation. Reparation is not a quid pro quo, it is a fundamental recognition of the transformation that needs to happen in each of us in order to address the root of the evil. We are now resolved to expiate each and every deplorable outrage committed against You; we are determined to make amends for the manifold offenses against Christian modesty in unbecoming dress and behavior, for all the foul seductions laid to ensnare the feet of the innocent, for the frequent violations of Sundays and holidays, and the shocking blasphemies uttered against You and Your Saints.

Episode 92: A Torrent of Grace: Turning our wounds into Sacred Gifts with Jesus

Mark Joseph Williams, who serves the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, as Special Advisor to Cardinal Joseph Tobin is a licensed clinical social worker and author of the book, "A Torrent of Grace". When Mr Williams was a young teen, he was victimized by clergy sexual abuse. The trauma and ensuing feelings of shame took years to come to grips with, and Mark's journey of faith back to the healing through the Catholic church is one of grace and accompaniment. He now works with and advocates for people who suffer from mental health issues stemming from abuse and trauma, and has dedicated his life to bringing witness to the redeeming grace of accompaniment and vulnerability he has found in Jesus.
Jen speaks with Mark and Gina Criscuolo, LCSW, and coordinator for the Office of Accompaniment at the Deparment of Protection of the Faithful for the Archdiocese of Newark.

He has laid the groundwork for the understanding of personal spiritual experience and communal missionary commitment found uniquely through the Sacred Heart of Christ, and that this is the missional foundation of all pastoral conversion that needs to be effected throughout our church.

Jen speaks with Mark Haas, composer, lecturer, music director and husband and father about the "treasure of inestimable value" that is the music composed throughout the centuries for Catholic worship. Mark's reversion to Catholicism lead him to learn more about what Vatican II's writers intended for the music at worship, and how we can be authentic with passing the patrimony on to future generations.

Mark Haas is composer and speaker who promotes sacred music within the Catholic tradition. His liturgical music has been sung in over 600 parishes, in 10 countries, including musical settings for various ordinations and dedications. In 2017, his orchestration of Michael Accurso’s I Will Praise Your Name Forever was presented by the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra during the Dedication of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, NC.

Mark has also contributed nearly 30 articles promoting various Catholic topics published by Aleteia.org, ChurchPOP.com, CatholicExchange.com, and Corpus Christi Watershed. Various pieces have been featured on CatholicVote.org, and The Patrick Madrid Show on Relevant Radio.

In 2016, his original choral piece, Prayer of St. Francis, was sung for Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Assisi, Italy. In 2024, his instrumental arrangement of Faith of Our Fathers was played during Mass at the FOCUS/SEEK Conference in St. Louis, MO. Mark holds a BFA in Music Composition from Marshall University, and an MFA in Composition from UNC School of the Arts. He currently serves as the Director of Music at the Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria, FL where he lives with his wife Renae and their seven original compositions.

Father Alex Gaitan has worked to curtail gang activity within Chicago’s immigrant community; brought to the forefront the mental health crisis among immigrants in Atlanta, Ga.; aided in citizenship classes and passport processing for immigrants at the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in San Gabriel, Cali.; and helped hundreds of Mexican farmers experiencing food insecurity during the pandemic in Fresno, Cali.
In 2022, Father Gaitan, a Claretian devoted to justice and peace, was called to the Archdiocese of Newark’s St. Joseph’s Church in Jersey City, where he has been part of a United Nations Ministry. Recently, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, Archbishop of Newark, appointed Father Gaitan to head the archdiocese’s newest ministry to support immigrants through local church communities.

Pope Francis speaks about the difference between a knowledge of a relationship with heart, versus knowing data with the intellect. He introduces this importance to understanding the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, and the writings of St. Bonaventure and St. John Henry Newman. The understanding of the heart is achieved with the fire of faith, and encompasses the contemplative and meditative mind, in order to listen to the heart of God. Pope Francis asks us to contemplate a return to the hearts the integrated part of our being, that fully encapsulates all that we are. Beyond any one system of study, we are a complex human being fully integrated as soul, and body, with mind, spirit, thought, will and emotional capabilities. At the center of this authentic, unique system is the fundamental heart of a human.

Each session of Dilexit Nos in a Year begins by breaking open the scriptures and topics coverred in order to outline the themes of Pope Francis, and frame our conversations for the weekly discussion for the year ahead. Lisa Lawmaster Hess is a transplanted Jersey girl who has lived in Pennsylvania for most of her adult life. In her eighth grade career report, Lisa declared her intention to become a magazine journalist, but, once at Bucknell, she opted to study psychology and education instead. After earning her master's degree, Lisa worked as a school counselor for 27 years. These days, she keeps busy as an adjunct professor of psychology at York College of Pennsylvania and, of course, writing. Currently, she's at work on two non-fiction projects and a variety of articles in addition to revising a novel and writing a third book about Marita, Charli, Angel and friends. Paul's book 'Hope for the Holidays' (Paulist Press 2023) offers practical advice for welcoming our holiday visitors back to church throughout Advent and into the Christmas season, using the secular narratives of the season to draw connections with the unchurched, and a personal and pastoral plan to work to accompany visitors to finding renewed hope in our Catholic church.

Paul Jarzembowski serves on staff for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Washington DC, overseeing the U.S. bishops' engagement with laity ministry, ecclesial movements, youth, and young adults. He is also the author of "Hope from the Ashes" (Paulist Press, 2021), on evangelization, pastoral care, and accompaniment of individuals through Catholic moments of return such as Lent. He was the lead staff for the USCCB engagement with the XV Synod of Bishops on "Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment," and its post-synodal exhortation, "Christus Vivit." Paul is also the United States' national coordinator for World Youth Day, and serves as an advisor to the Vatican on ministries with young people.

Preston Dibble is the Diocesan Director of Music for the Diocese of Paterson, and the Director of Music at Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange, he serves in pivotal roles in the American Guild of Organists and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.

John Kalinowski is a Board Certified Hospital Chaplain and the Coordinator for the ministries of Loss and Healing at the Archdiocese of Newark.

Both men speak of the importance of evangelization and accompaniment of those that they meet especially in times of grief.
