This year, Christians observe Ash Wednesday as secular society celebrates Valentine's Day. The paradox of these two celebrations can help us understand the consolation of God's mercy. We give a brief history of the season of Lent, some biblical and liturgical considerations we will encounter, and the ways in which we can enter deeper into our journey toward an Easter of transformation.

Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

Fr. John and Jen sit down together again (finally!) for one last conversation of hope before Christmas.
Fr. John gives us a surefire way to be renewed in hope and joy this Christmas by bringing our repentant hearts to the manger this year.
Jen and Fr. John read from some of the carols of the season that give us strong theology for discipleship once we get past the well-known first verse.

Jen has her first conversation with two guests, Fr. Gino de la Rama Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Newark, and Fr. Patrick Seo, Associate Vocations Director, about how to keep the door open for the young people in your life to consider their calling whether it be to marriage, clergy or religious life.

Fr. Gino has served as the Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Newark for the past 7 years, and is a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark who grew up in Jersey City.

Fr. Andrew Seo was named by Cardinal Tobin just this past summmer as Associate Director of Vocations, and is a native of Bergen County.

Our conversation gives insight into the ways their families helped and sometimes discouraged their vocations, and how important it is to ask Christ to show you His calling for you, in order to live a happier, freer and more fulfilled life. We speak about Advent, Christmas traditions as well.

Jen interviews Paul Jarzembowski, author and Associate Director for the Laity, oversees USCCB engagement with lay ministry, ecclesial movements, youth, and young adults. Paul's book 'Hope for the Holidays' (Paulist Press 2023) offers practical advice for welcoming our holiday visitors back to church throughout Advent and into the Christmas season, using the secular narratives of the season to draw connections with the unchurched, and a personal and pastoral plan to work to accompany visitors to finding renewed hope in our Catholic church.

Paul Jarzembowski serves on staff for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in Washington DC, overseeing the U.S. bishops' engagement with laity ministry, ecclesial movements, youth, and young adults. He is also the author of "Hope from the Ashes" (Paulist Press, 2021), on evangelization, pastoral care, and accompaniment of individuals through Catholic moments of return such as Lent. He was the lead staff for the USCCB engagement with the XV Synod of Bishops on "Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment," and its post-synodal exhortation, "Christus Vivit." Paul is also the United States' national coordinator for World Youth Day, and serves as an advisor to the Vatican on ministries with young people.
